Total eradication of nesting colonies at Transnet Port Terminals

The challenge
Established nesting colonies on port structures are the hardest bird problem there is: the birds are breeding on site, not just visiting. As a state-owned operator, Transnet also required a solution that was demonstrably humane and environmentally sustainable, poisons and culling were off the table.
Our approach
BCS designed a combined programme: Spectre Net exclusion netting to permanently seal the structural voids and sheltered areas where colonies were nesting, and Vamoose gel treatment on the exposed ledges and steel the birds used for perching. Both methods displace birds without harming them.
The result
The nesting colonies were fully eradicated from the treated structures. The client singled out both the environmental soundness of the approach and the innovation of combining gel and netting as a single engineered system.
“BCS was employed to provide and implement an environmentally friendly and sustainable solution... their innovative use of gel and netting solutions has resulted in the total eradication of the bird colonies nesting.”
