Vamoose - Bird Repellent Gel
Vamoose Bird Repellent™ System is used to repel birds from manmade roosting and landing areas such as building ledges, girders, gutters and pipes. It has its effect by creating alarm and fright when birds alight on the tacky material. Due to its ingredients and mechanism it is in no way harmful to the birds, humans or animals.
Handling Precautions
When used for its intended purpose and under normal conditions of industrial handling, Vamoose Bird Repellent™ System does not present any hazard.
Emergency Procedures
| Fire: | Extinguish fires with water spray, foam, dry chemical (Be) or C02. Keep Vamoose Gel containers cool with water spray. In fire conditions, rapid depolymerisation can occur producing low molecular weight hydrocarbons of low flash point Fire fighters should wear self-contained breathing apparatus. |
| Product in Eye: | Immediately flood with copious quantities of water for 10 – 15 minutes, holding the eye open. Obtain medical attention if soreness or redness persists. |
| Product on Skin: | Use a proprietary waterless hand cleanser or liquid paraffin. Will not cause any harmful skin irritation. |
| Product Ingested: | Wash out mouth with water. Product non-toxic. Do not induce vomiting because of risk of aspiration. |
Fire Hazard
Polybutene used in Vamoose has a flash point (Luchaire closed cup) in excess of 61°C and presents little fire hazard.
Health Effects
Polybutenes are materials of very low biological activity as evidenced by their accepted use for many years as components for cosmetics, surgical adhesives and pharmaceutical preparations. The efficacy of polybutenes as tackifying additives, plasticisers and extenders in both thermoplastic polymer and elastomer systems, combined with their exceptionally low toxicity, also makes them useful materials for use in food contact applications.
Representative samples of polybutenes have been studied to assess local effects on the skin and eyes together with systematic effects following ingestion. Formulated products containing polybutenes have also been examined for skin irritation and sensitisation in humans.
Eye Contact
Irritation tests have shown that undiluted polybutenes are unlikely to be more than mild, transient eye irritants. Only slightly conjunctivital effects were observed and there was no evidence of comeal involvement.
Skin Contact
Rabbits showed no, or only slight skin irritation following the application of several cosmetic preparations containing polybutenes for 24 hour exposure periods. In addition, repeat insult patch tests in humans with up to 50% polybutene formulations produced, at most, minimal irritation in a small percentage of the population. No sensitisation reactions were observed.
Oral Toxicity
The acute oral toxicity of polybutenes is extremely low with LDso values quoted in the range of greater than 15,4 - 34,1 g/kg in rats, these being the maximum dose levels used. Long term feeding studies with up to 20 000 ppm (2%) polybutene in the diet of rats, and up to 1000mglkglday in dogs, for 2 years produced no treatment related effects.
These findings indicate that polybutenes can be considered as practically non-toxic by ingestion.
Inhalation
High viscosity and low vapour pressure are characteristics of polybutene. They thus constitute no significant inhalation hazard at ambient temperature.
Environmental Data
Polybutene is virtually insoluble in water and its biotoxicity in an aqueous medium is not easy to assess. However, the IMO rates po/ybutene as unlikely to bioaccumulate and are non-hazardous to marine species. Polybutene have a highly branched carbon chain and are therefore resistant to biodegradation.
